What Is a Confidential Marriage License?
A confidential marriage license is legally binding and carries the same legal authority as a public marriage license. The primary difference is privacy — confidential licenses are not available for public viewing. Public marriage licenses, by contrast, become part of the public record and may be accessed by members of the public.
Requirements for a Confidential Marriage License
• Both parties must be at least 18 years old
• Both parties must be living together at the time of application
• The marriage must take place in California
• No witnesses are required for the ceremony
• The license must be filed in the county where it was issued within 10 days of the ceremony
The confidential marriage license is registered with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office. Only the married couple may obtain certified copies without a court order.

$17 — Fee charged by Los Angeles County for each certified copy
$15 — Notary fee per signature
